Newave Surfboards
Surfboards and travel—that's not always the easiest combination. A board bag takes up a lot of space in the car, it quickly becomes a hassle on the train, and when flying, there are additional airline fees and the worry about damaged boards...
Newave was developed for exactly this problem: surfboards that can be dismantled into several parts while still functioning like a classic surfboard. But Newave goes a step further. The boards are not only dismantlable, but also have a modular design. The individual parts can be combined with one another, allowing different surfboards to be created from just a few components.
9 surfboards from just 7 parts
The heart of the Newave concept is its modular system. Nose, middle, and tail sections of different boards can be combined. With the complete Newave quiver of just 7 parts, you can configure up to 9 different surfboards – from the small Lazy Fish 5'10" to the Longboard 9'0". Depending on the wave conditions, you can, for example, put together a fish, a mini-malibu, a mid-length, or a longboard without having to take several complete surfboards with you.

How are Newave surfboards assembled?
The individual board parts are connected to each other via the characteristic W-shaped joint and secured with locking pins. No tools are required for assembly.
Newave has developed and tested the connection system over several years. The connection elements are made of injection-molded nylon and are designed in such a way that the flex and rocker of the board are maintained across the joints.
Fundamentally, the board consists of the same materials as a modern epoxy surfboard:
- a high-density EPS foam core
- fiberglass lamination
- epoxy resin
- additional fiberglass reinforcements in the joint areas
- nylon connection elements
- locking pins
Newave states that the system was tested under stress tests with over 300 kg and meets the same resistance criteria as a classic surfboard.

And can you feel the joints while surfing?
That was also one of our first questions. After all, the most practical travel board is of little use if you have to make major compromises while surfing.
That is exactly what the system was designed for: as soon as the individual parts are connected and locked together, the board is intended to behave like a normal surfboard. The constant width and thickness in the joint areas as well as the nylon connectors ensure that the flex and rocker are maintained as naturally as possible.
You don't get an inflatable or soft travel surfboard, but a properly laminated epoxy surfboard – just in a dismantlable form.
The concept is especially exciting for travel
The most obvious advantage is the packed size. Depending on the model, a Newave surfboard can be dismantled into two or three parts and transported in the designated Newave backpack. This turns a 7'6", 8'0", or even 9'0" surfboard into luggage that is significantly easier to transport in a car, on a train, or when traveling.
This is particularly exciting for anyone who:
- regularly flies with their surfboard
- travels by train or public transport
- has limited space in the car
- has no room at home for several surfboards
- enjoys surfing different shapes but doesn't want to own five boards
And this is exactly where the modularity comes into play again: instead of taking several complete boards with you, individual additional board parts can be enough to react to different wave conditions at the spot.
Which Newave surfboards are available?
The Newave range now covers a quite large spectrum.
From the compact fish to mini-malibu and mid-length, all the way to the classic longboard, various shapes can be assembled.
Lazy Fish 5'10" – 38L
The smallest board in the range. A playful fish for small to medium-sized waves and anyone looking for a compact, uncomplicated board with a high fun factor.
All Round Fish 6'6" – 42L
A versatile all-rounder with plenty of volume and little rocker. Easy to paddle, gets into waves early, and is still agile – ideal as a first shortboard or as a supplement to a longboard.
Long Fish 6'7" – 44L
A mix of mini-malibu and fish. Lots of stability and good gliding behavior, combined with more agility than a classic mini-malibu.
Mini-Malibu 7'6" – 55L
A stable and versatile board for beginners to intermediate surfers. Plenty of volume makes paddling and take-offs easier, while the shape and rails offer enough potential for the next steps in progress.
Mid-Length 8'0" – 58L
Lots of paddling comfort, early take-offs, and wide, controlled turns. A very versatile board for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Malibu 8'2" – 60L
A mix of longboard and mini-malibu with plenty of glide, stability, and a relaxed ride feel.
Egg 8'2" – 60L
A versatile and somewhat more progressive shape that combines the agility of a mini-malibu with the easy paddling and gliding of a longboard.
Gun 8'10" – 63L
For bigger and more powerful waves. A narrower nose, more rocker, and a pintail provide control when conditions become more demanding.
Longboard 9'0" – 65L
Classic longboard feeling with plenty of stability and early glide – but thanks to the modular system, significantly easier to transport than a normal 9'0".

Would you like to test the boards?
Currently, you can rent and try out the All Round Fish 6'6", the Mini-Malibu 7'6", and the Longboard 9'0" among others.
This way you can get to know the connection system and test the board in the water before you decide on your own Newave setup. You can find all Newave surfboards as well as other rental boards online or directly at the Surfari Shop in Zurich.
